Instagram views vs reach: what is the difference?

Views count every time your content is shown, even if the same person watches your Reel three times. Reach ("Accounts reached") counts each person only once.

In early 2025, Meta announced that "Views" would replace the old impressions and plays as the main metric. In the interface for third-party tools the switch was complete in April 2025; in the app it became visible step by step before that 1. That leads to two mistakes you should avoid:

  1. Mixing old and new numbers. A 2024 Reel with 5,000 plays and a 2026 Reel with 8,000 views are not comparable. The measurement method is different.
  2. Reading views as growth. A Reel that your regulars watch several times can have lots of views and still reach hardly any new people.

So for every comparison, use accounts reached. They are also the basis for every rate in this article.

Where do you find Instagram Insights, and what changed in 2026?

You find Insights in professional accounts (creator or business account) through your profile and on every single post under "View insights". Personal accounts do not have full insights.

According to several tool vendors, Instagram rebuilt Insights in April 2026: three areas (overview, interactions, audience), new metrics such as share rate, skip rate and "views over time", plus a retention curve for videos. Collab posts, Trial Reels and boosted content were reportedly not captured everywhere at launch 2. We did not find an announcement from Instagram itself.

So check the labels in your own app. The seven numbers below exist in some form, even if they are named slightly differently for you.

Which 7 Instagram Insights numbers show whether you are growing?

These seven numbers answer the questions that matter for creators: am I reaching new people, are they watching, and does what I post land with them?

# Metric What it shows What you use it for
1 Accounts reached how many individual people saw you basis for every rate
2 Share of non-followers how much reach comes from recommendations early-warning system
3 Skip rate how many swipe away early testing your hook
4 Watch time and retention curve how long and how far people watch editing and length
5 Sends per reach how often your Reel is shared in DMs signal among non-followers
6 Engagement rate by reach likes, comments, saves in relation to reach quality over volume
7 Follows and link taps who takes the next step the way into your funnel

Numbers 3 to 5 tie directly into the signals Instagram head Adam Mosseri named as the most important in January 2025: watch time, likes per reach and sends per reach 3. How Instagram turns these into reach, without individual numbers being "hackable", is covered in the shadowban article.

Why is your share of non-followers an early-warning system?

Because it shows whether Instagram still recommends you to strangers at all. If it collapses to almost zero from one day to the next, that is the clearest sign of a recommendation restriction.

For Reels, a large part of reach typically comes from people who do not follow you yet. Industry analyses put it at around half. These are secondary figures from analytics vendors, not an Instagram statement 4. More important than any benchmark is your own trend: note the value every week.

If the share drops sharply, do this:

  1. Open Account Status. There you can see whether your account or individual posts are no longer being recommended. The 5-minute check is in Instagram shadowban.
  2. Rule out other causes. Reels longer than 3 minutes are not recommended. Accounts that mostly post other people's content have lost recommendations since April 2026 (see Originality on Instagram). And with an OnlyFans reference in your bio, teens drop out of your audience (see Can you put your OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio?).
  3. Check your profile. Your profile picture and bio can take the whole account out of recommendations.

What do skip rate and the retention curve say about your hook?

Skip rate shows how many people swipe your Reel away early. If it is high, the first seconds did not convince, no matter how good the rest is.

The exact definition is contradictory across sources: some vendors describe it as swiping away in the first three seconds, others more generally as dropping off early 2. For practical purposes: the lower it is, the better your opening worked.

The retention curve shows at which point viewers drop off. How to read it:

You can test new hooks with Trial Reels. They are shown only to non-followers first, and Mosseri explicitly recommends them for experimenting 5.

A common misconception: that skip rate has been the new main ranking signal since 2026. There is no evidence for that. It is a metric for you; Mosseri's main signals remain watch time, likes and sends 35.

Why are sends so important?

Because sends, meaning sharing a post by direct message, carry a bit more weight than likes among non-followers, according to Mosseri. Likes count a bit more among people who already follow you 3.

The often-quoted claim that one send is worth three to five likes is not backed up. Mosseri only said "a bit more important". So always calculate sends per reach:

Sends per reach = sends ÷ accounts reached × 100

There is no independent target value. One tool vendor calls 2 to 3% strong; that is a rule of thumb without a verified data basis 6. Compare your own Reels with each other instead: which topics get shared? Usually it is content that makes people think of someone ("this is so you", a styling tip, a relatable everyday moment).

Please don't write "Send this to five friends" in the caption. Whether Instagram downgrades it as engagement bait is not proven, but it rarely works the way people hope.

How do you calculate engagement rate on Instagram?

Calculate it by reach, not by followers. Mosseri explicitly advises creators to look at engagement rate rather than total views or likes 5.

Engagement rate by reach = (likes + comments + saves + sends) ÷ accounts reached × 100

A worked example with made-up numbers:

Reel A Reel B
Views 20,000 9,000
Accounts reached 12,000 6,000
Likes + comments + saves + sends 240 300
Engagement rate by reach 2.0% 5.0%

At first glance, Reel A looks better. But Reel B got more than twice the share of people to do something. That is the format you should build on.

Only compare with numbers from the internet if the method is the same. Analytics vendors put Reels at roughly 0.5 to 1.2% when calculated by followers and roughly 2 to 3% when calculated by reach 4. Above all, those ranges show how much the result depends on the calculation method. An "engagement rate calculator" online does nothing more than this formula, so it is only as good as the inputs and the method it uses.

How do you connect Insights to your funnel?

By measuring for yourself from the profile onward. Instagram shows you profile visits, follows and taps on your bio link. What happens after that, whether someone subscribes, Instagram does not know.

How to close the gap:

  1. Your own tracking link just for Instagram. OnlyFans offers campaign links that show how many subscriptions come through a specific link. More on the link itself in Can you put your OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio?.
  2. Compare link taps in Instagram with the clicks on your landing page. If they differ a lot, one of the tools is not measuring cleanly.
  3. One row per week: profile visits, follows, link taps, new subscriptions through the Instagram link.

There are no independent figures on how many followers turn into paying fans. Your own rate after a few weeks says more than any benchmark. Which platform is right for you in the first place is covered in Which traffic source suits you?.

If you work with an agency, exactly these numbers should be in its report, with the calculation shown. What to look for is in Your agency's monthly report.

What does a 15-minute weekly check look like?

Once a week, always on the same day, you enter the same values in a table. After four weeks you see trends instead of chance.

Value Week 1 Week 2 Week 3 Week 4
Accounts reached (7 days) – – – –
Share of non-followers – – – –
Best Reel: skip rate – – – –
Best Reel: average watch time – – – –
Sends per reach (average across Reels) – – – –
Engagement rate by reach – – – –
New followers – – – –
Link taps – – – –
New subscriptions through the Instagram link – – – –
Account Status OK? (yes/no) – – – –

Plus three questions:

Single outliers say little. Reach fluctuates even without an obvious reason. Only when a value moves in the same direction for several weeks is it worth reacting. How often you should post for the numbers to mean something is covered in How often should you post on Instagram?.

Frequently asked questions

All answers as a list
Why do I have more views than followers but hardly any new followers?

Views also count replays, and many viewers watch a Reel without opening your profile. Look at follows per Reel and at profile visits. If the Reel entertains but says nothing about you, there is no reason to follow you.

Are numbers from third-party analytics tools more accurate?

No. Reputable tools pull their numbers through Meta's official interface, so it is the same data. Do not use tools that ask for your Instagram password.

How many followers do I need before Insights are worth it?

They are worth it from day one. Especially with small accounts, the share of non-followers and the skip rate show whether your Reels reach strangers at all. You need a professional account for this, which is free.

My share of non-followers suddenly dropped to zero. Am I banned?

Not necessarily banned, but probably no longer being recommended. Open Account Status and check your profile picture, bio and latest posts. You notice a real suspension because you can no longer log in or post.

Do Collab posts and Trial Reels count in my Insights?

Partly. According to tool vendors, Collab posts and Trial Reels were not included in all the new metrics when Insights were rebuilt in 2026 2. So evaluate those posts individually.

Our take

Insights are not a report card; they are a tool. If you only look at views, you end up celebrating the wrong Reels. If you track accounts reached, share of non-followers and engagement rate by reach, you see early what works and what doesn't.
