These questions are not here to scare you off or talk you into anything. They help you make a decision you will still understand in five years. Write your answers down and read them again a few days later.
Why do you want to do OnlyFans?
Every reason is legitimate, as long as it is really yours. Money, independence, curiosity, enjoying your body or being on camera: creators name all of these in interviews. What matters is that you are honest with yourself.
Question 1: Whose idea is this? Check whether the wish comes from you or whether someone is pushing you, such as a partner, a friend or an agency that messaged you on Instagram. Media reports describe cases where partners or agencies built up pressure and pushed women toward ever more extreme content (hessenschau 2024 5, Y-Kollektiv 2023). If someone else wants this more than you do, treat that as a warning sign. How to tell a legitimate agency from a bad one is covered in OnlyFans agency red flags.
Question 2: Do you need the money right now? If you have to pay next month's rent or debts out of OnlyFans, you are starting under the worst kind of pressure. Income comes in slowly, swings a lot and can't be planned. In a survey of 1,000 creators in the US and UK, respondents named financial insecurity as the biggest burnout factor (Billion Dollar Boy 2025, not specific to OnlyFans) 10. Starting with a financial cushion is far healthier.
How much do OnlyFans beginners realistically make?
Most creators earn little, especially in the first months. That is not pessimism, it is what the official numbers add up to.
Question 3: What number are you counting on, and where does it come from? According to the annual accounts of Fenix International, the company behind OnlyFans, the platform paid creators around $6.2 billion in the financial year to 30 November 2025. Just under 5.06 million creator accounts were registered. Divided, that is about $1,225 per account per year, or roughly $100 a month 1. The figure includes inactive accounts, so it is only a rough guide. A 2025 ZDFinfo documentary cites estimates of about $180 a month for an average account 2.
Then there is the distribution. The money is concentrated in a small number of very large accounts. How concentrated is hard to pin down, because OnlyFans does not publish a median. Figures that circulate online, such as "70% earn under $200", come from vendors who don't disclose their method.
An honest counterexample comes from the Swiss creator known as "Mrs. Nice": according to SRF, she earned about as much as she had before as a watchmaker 3. The celebrity figures in headlines are self-reported by people who already had a big audience, and they are no benchmark for you.
OnlyFans keeps 20% of what fans pay. From the rest, your tax reserves and possibly an agency's commission still come off. More in How much do OnlyFans creators make?
How much time does OnlyFans really take?
OnlyFans takes more time than most people expect, and above all it takes time every week. Producing content is only one part. On top come messages, promotion on other platforms, editing and bookkeeping.
Question 4: How many hours a week do you actually have free? A former creator told Insider she spent at least two hours a day on messages alone 11. For "Mrs. Nice", SRF reported that about half of her working time went into the laptop, meaning replies and editing 3. A former preschool teacher in the US told Business Insider she works about 20 hours a week 12. These are individual cases, but the scale is clear: a part-time job, not an evening project.
Question 5: Can you handle being permanently present? Fans drift away quickly when nothing new comes (ZDFheute 2025) 4. That creates pressure, on holiday, when you're ill or in bad weeks. And OnlyFans itself brings you hardly any new fans. You have to build your reach on Instagram, Reddit, X or TikTok (Bonifacio et al. 2025) 7. Ask yourself whether you want to be visible on those platforms for the long run.
Where are your boundaries, and will they hold under pressure?
Set your boundaries before anyone asks about them. If you only work them out in a chat with a fan who is ready to pay, you are negotiating from the weaker position.
Question 6: What will you show, and what never? Make a list with three columns: "I do this", "maybe later, if I want to" and "never". Think about your face, tattoos, voice, your home and other people in the frame. This list belongs to you. You can change it, but deliberately, not in the moment of a request.
Question 7: What will you do when a big offer comes in? Several reports describe boundaries slipping under money or success pressure. One creator told ZDFheute she never wanted to make porn, and then came requests for personalized videos 4. The former creator who spoke to Insider earned up to $20,000 a month and still describes those three years as the unhappiest of her life, partly because she sent things for money that she didn't want to send 11. Think of a sentence you will use to say no, right now. And think of who will remind you of it when you waver.
Does an OnlyFans account stay online forever?
Assume that anything you upload can turn up outside OnlyFans at some point. You can delete the account. You cannot delete copies, screenshots and leaks that way.
Question 8: What happens if someone finds it in five or ten years? In a study of 43 OnlyFans creators (USENIX 2024), 24 reported leaks. The participants considered them practically unavoidable. All of them had taken at least one protective measure before starting, such as a stage name, separate identities or watermarks 6. Keeping your face out is no complete protection either: face search services such as PimEyes also match tattoos and scars 1314. A case from the US shows that a digital footprint can reach your next employer: a teacher says she lost a new job after her earlier account became known 15.
Picture a job application, a parents' evening at school, a new relationship. If the thought paralyzes you, take it seriously. How to protect yourself as well as possible is covered in Can you stay anonymous on OnlyFans?
Question 9: Who may know, and who must never find out? A study of sex workers in Canada (Jansson et al. 2022) describes three paths 8. Most had told at least one partner, often with negative consequences such as jealousy or control, although for a minority the relationship got better. Others stayed silent. That protected them from being judged, but living a double life was a strain. A third path was to seek out people who already knew. The study covers sex work in general, not only OnlyFans. Make a list: who would support you, who wouldn't, and who could hear about it from someone else?
What do you need to sort out before you start?
OnlyFans is a small business, with everything that comes with it. You are not anonymous toward the platform.
Question 10: Are you ready to run a small business? To get verified, you upload your ID and a selfie holding it. Fans see your stage name; OnlyFans knows your real name. A few points many people underestimate:
- Tax reserves: Put part of your income into a separate account from day one, so the money for your tax bill is there when it's due. How to do that is explained in Budgeting with irregular income: the 4-pot system.
- Banking: In the US, 63% of respondents to an industry survey said they had lost a bank account or a payment service (Free Speech Coalition 2023) 16. Whether this happens as often in Germany, Austria or Switzerland has not been documented.
What you need to register for tax and how you are insured is best clarified with your tax office, your health insurer or a tax adviser. The rules differ between Germany, Austria and Switzerland and change over time.

How does OnlyFans affect your mental health?
For some creators OnlyFans is liberating, for others it wears them down. Often it is both. The strain comes less from the content than from the messages, the constant presence, the comments and the fear of leaks.
Question 11: How do you deal with closeness, pressure and contempt? In the USENIX study, 26 of 43 participants reported harassment and toxic content, and 19 reported fans testing their boundaries 6. Media scholar Lisa Andergassen describes the relationship between fan and creator as one-sided, even though it feels intimate to the fan (hessenschau 2024) 5. Berlin creator Yma Nowak says she quit because fans believed in a real relationship and wanted to meet her. Then there is the stigma: German media mostly portray creators as money machines or victims (Wurm/Wimmer 2024) 9. Ask yourself how stable you are right now. If your mental health is poor at the moment, this is not a good time to start.
Question 12: Who will catch you, and when will you stop? Plan your exit when you plan your start. That can be a date, a savings goal or a warning sign at which you take a break. Think about who you can talk to openly. In a survey of creators, 52% reported burnout and 37% had thought about quitting (Billion Dollar Boy 2025, not specific to OnlyFans) 10.

What if your answers say no to OnlyFans?
Then you have saved yourself a lot. A no after honest reflection is a good decision, not a missed chance. Typical reasons not to start (yet):
- You need the money soon and reliably.
- Someone else wants it more than you do.
- You can't shake the thought of your family or employer finding out.
- You don't have the time or the wish to be present on social media for the long run.
- Your mental health isn't in a good place right now.
If your answers point toward starting, you now have a foundation: boundaries, a realistic number, a schedule and an exit plan. What the first months realistically look like is described in Your first 90 days on OnlyFans.

All answers as a list
Can you start OnlyFans with no followers?
Yes, but OnlyFans itself sends you hardly any visitors. You have to build your reach on other platforms, and that takes weeks to months. Expect very little income during that time.
Is OnlyFans anonymous?
Toward fans, you can appear under a stage name. Toward OnlyFans, no: you are verified with your ID. And even without your face, tattoos, your voice or your home can make you recognizable.
Can I simply delete my account later?
The account, yes. Content that has already been copied or leaked, no. That is why the question "Can I live with it if it stays?" matters more than the question of deleting.
