This page is the starting point of our guide. It explains how the platform works, without jargon and without income promises. Every section links to an article that goes deeper.
What is OnlyFans?
OnlyFans is a platform where creators sell content to paying fans and message them directly. It is run by Fenix International Ltd, a company based in London 1. OnlyFans is best known for adult content, but there is also fitness, cooking, music and other topics on the platform.
For you as a creator, OnlyFans is three things at its core:
- A protected space where only paying or signed-up fans see your content.
- A chat where you message fans and sell content.
- A till that processes payments, keeps its fee and pays the rest out to you.
The scale shows in the annual accounts for the financial year to 30 November 2025: fans paid around $7.8 billion, of which $6.2 billion went to creators. There were 5.06 million creator accounts and 437 million fan accounts 1. Those counts include every account that has not been deleted, including ones where nothing happens any more.
How does OnlyFans work for creators: how do you make money?
Through five types of income that you can combine. The key terms in brief:
| Income type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Subscription | Fans pay a monthly price to see your feed. You can also offer multi-month packages at a discount (bundles). |
| PPV (pay-per-view) | Single pieces of content that fans unlock separately, either as a locked post or as a paid message. |
| Tip | A voluntary payment with no fixed item in return, for example on a post or in the chat. |
| Custom | A piece of content one fan orders, at a price you agree on together. |
| Livestream | A live broadcast during which fans can tip. |
Subscription prices have a set range. Agency and vendor sites name $4.99 to $49.99 a month, or free 5.
You can also run your page for free. Then you earn only through PPV, messages and tips. A free page usually brings more fans but more volatile income. There is no independent comparison data. How to set your prices is covered in OnlyFans pricing.
Where things are heading: in the 2025 financial year only 27% of platform revenue came from subscriptions. 73% came from messages, PPV and tips, and that part grew by 20% while subscription revenue fell by 10% 1. What that means for you: a small, active fan base can bring in more than lots of quiet subscribers. More in Is the subscription dead? PPV and messages.
What percentage does OnlyFans take?
OnlyFans takes 20% of every payment, whether subscription, PPV or tip, and 80% goes to you 12. There is no sign-up fee and no monthly charge for creators.
An example: a fan pays $10 for a PPV item. OnlyFans keeps $2 and $8 lands in your balance.
What still comes off after the 20%:
- Currency conversion and bank fees: OnlyFans settles in US dollars. You carry exchange-rate and bank fees yourself 2.
- Chargebacks: if a fan reverses a card payment (a chargeback), OnlyFans deducts your share again 2. How to protect yourself from these schemes is covered in Chargebacks, scams and fake fans.
- Reserves for tax and, depending on where you live, health or social insurance.
- Commission, if you work with an agency.
Who are the fans on OnlyFans?
Mostly people in the US, with a growing share from Europe. In the 2025 financial year, 62% of platform revenue came from the US, 22% from the UK and Europe, and 16% from the rest of the world. Europe was the fastest-growing region, up 22% 1. These are OnlyFans' own figures for its fan base, not markets maevia serves. OnlyFans does not publish a breakdown by individual country.
What this means for you: most paying fans speak English. If you live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and post in English, you are writing for the platform's biggest audience. There are no reliable figures on how many fans come from any single European country.
On the age and gender of fans there are only estimates from vendors with their own interests, so we leave them out. What is well documented: money is unevenly spread. A few fans spend a lot, most spend little or nothing. A sample from one traffic vendor found that only just over 4% of subscribers pay anything at all 6. That is a paid press release with a small sample, but it shows the direction.
Can you find new fans on OnlyFans itself?
Hardly. OnlyFans has no home feed and no algorithm that suggests you to new people the way Instagram or TikTok do. A study of adult content creators describes exactly this: because the platform delivers very little reach of its own, creators promote themselves on Instagram, Reddit, X or TikTok 7.
This is the point beginners underestimate most often. An OnlyFans account without reach somewhere else usually stays empty. Which platform suits you and which rules apply there is covered in Which traffic source fits you?, and for Instagram specifically in Your OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio.
How do you become an OnlyFans creator?
You create an account, get verified and add a bank account. Only then can you set prices and earn money. The steps in brief:
- Create an account with an email address used only for OnlyFans, secured with two-factor login.
- Get verified: you must be at least 18 and prove your identity with an ID document and a selfie. Fans see your stage name; OnlyFans knows your real name. The process and common reasons for rejection are in OnlyFans verification.
- Add your bank account and tax details. Details in OnlyFans payouts.
- Set up your profile: stage name, picture, bio, price. Decide beforehand whether you block certain countries. Help with that in Privacy on OnlyFans.
- Sort out registrations: what you need to register for tax and insurance depends on the country you live in. Check with your tax office or a tax adviser.
If you shoot with other people, you need a separate release with proof of age for every person.
How does the money get to you?
What fans pay lands in your account as a balance after the 20% is taken off. From there you withdraw it to your own bank account. According to the terms of service a minimum amount has to be reached first, but the terms do not name a figure 2. Vendor guides name $20 and a waiting period of about seven days per payment; neither is officially confirmed.
One rule matters that has nothing to do with OnlyFans: the money belongs in your account. An agency that wants to redirect payouts to its own account is a red flag. How to tell a trustworthy offer from a bad one is in OnlyFans agency red flags.
What rules apply on OnlyFans?
The OnlyFans Terms of Service and its Acceptable Use Policy. They set out what you may show, what is banned and when OnlyFans can suspend your account or hold back earnings 23. A few basic rules:
- Everyone in your content must be an adult, verified and consenting.
- AI content must be labelled, and according to the annual accounts, purely AI-generated creator profiles are not allowed 1.
- Payments outside the platform for content you offer through OnlyFans are risky and can lead to a suspension.
New terms from 1 November 2026: according to a media report, OnlyFans will be able to suspend accounts and withhold earnings on the mere suspicion of a breach 4. What exactly changes is covered in The new OnlyFans terms from 1 November 2026.
How much do OnlyFans creators make?
Most make little. On paper, OnlyFans paid out around $100 per creator account per month in the 2025 financial year, inactive accounts included 1. Because the money is spread very unevenly, a few earn a great deal and most earn less. OnlyFans does not publish an official median. The full picture is in How much do OnlyFans creators really make?.

All answers as a list
Is OnlyFans only for adult content?
No, the platform also allows other content, such as fitness or music. Its reputation and its economics, though, are shaped by adult content. If you start there without adult content, you need strong reach of your own.
Does it cost anything to become a creator?
As far as we know, OnlyFans charges no sign-up fee. The platform earns its 20% of every fan payment. Your costs tend to sit outside the platform, for equipment or a tax adviser, for example.
Can I be anonymous on OnlyFans?
Not towards OnlyFans: you are verified there with your ID. Towards fans, you can use a stage name and keep your real name, location and personal data private. At maevia, creators show their face, because fans pay for a real person. More in Privacy on OnlyFans.
Do I have to post in English?
Not necessarily, but most of the revenue comes from the US 1. What matters is where you build your reach and who you reach there. If you live in a German-speaking country, posting in English opens up the larger audience.
Do I need an agency to start on OnlyFans?
No. You can take the first steps yourself and get to know your own business along the way. Our 2-minute check helps you judge whether and when an agency makes sense.
What now?
Technically, OnlyFans is simple: account, verification, price, done. The hard parts are everything around it: reach, boundaries, taxes and staying power. If after this overview you want to know whether working with us makes sense for you, you can apply now for an intro call.
