Are you suspended or just restricted?
You can tell from the notice in the app and from your Account Status. Not every restriction is a suspension, and the routes differ.
| What you see | What it means | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Reach among non-followers collapses, no notice | Your content or account is no longer being recommended | Check Account Status, change the trigger (see Instagram shadowban) |
| Notice about unoriginal content | Account no longer recommended because it mostly posts other people's content | Post mostly your own content for 30 days, delete unoriginal posts, appeal |
| Profile shows an AI-generated person without a label | Account loses recommendation eligibility | Add the "AI-generated profile" label |
| "Content removed" notice | A post broke the Community Guidelines | Appeal the removal, keep an eye on the warning |
| Certain features are temporarily blocked | Temporary restriction, often for spam-like behaviour | Wait, change your behaviour, read the notice in the app |
| Account disabled or suspended | You can no longer get into your account | Rule out a hack, then appeal from the notice |
| Login fails, password or email was changed | Possible hack | Account recovery, not an appeal |
Since 30 April 2026, the originality rule also applies to photos and carousels. You can share other people's content without risk through your Story, the repost button or a collab post 1. Since 31 August 2026, profiles showing an AI-generated person lose recommendations unless they are labelled. If you only use AI for editing, you don't need the label 2.
Take warnings seriously, even while your account is still running. But don't count on a warning always coming before a suspension. The Oversight Board, Meta's independent oversight body, criticises the fact that users cannot tell when Meta collects warnings and when it suspends permanently straight away 3.
What should you do in the first 24 hours?
Stay calm, document everything, rule out a hack and use only the official routes.
- Take screenshots of the notice, the date, the stated reason and the affected post.
- Check whether it is a hack. Did you get emails about changed passwords, email addresses or logins from unknown devices? A New York Times investigation from July 2026 found that of five reported "wrongful suspensions", Meta said two were hacked accounts suspended because of what the attackers posted 4. If so, secure your email inbox first and use the official recovery. In the EU, Meta offers a video selfie for this, which it compares with the photos on your profile. Meta says it deletes the facial data afterwards 5.
- Appeal, and do it right away (next section).
- Don't create a new account and don't keep posting through secondary accounts.
- Tell your fans through your own channels, if you have any: newsletter, your own website, other platforms. A short, factual note is enough.
Watch out for "recovery experts". Anyone who contacts you after your public cry for help, claiming to be a Meta employee, a hacker or an unban service, is almost always a scammer. Typical signs are guarantees, upfront payment in crypto and requests for your password, code or ID 6. Nobody outside Meta has access to Meta's review. The only legitimate paid help is a lawyer. More in Instagram hacked: the first 60 minutes and Instagram unban services are a scam.
How do you appeal an Instagram suspension in the app?
Through the notice about the suspension or removal, or through Account Status. That is where Instagram offers to request another review, if one is available for your case.
- Open the notice and choose the option to disagree or request a review.
- Give factual reasons if there is a free-text field: which post, and why in your view it does not break the rule that was named.
- Confirm your identity if Instagram asks, for example by video selfie or ID. Again, only inside the app.
- Don't wait. The information on the deadline is contradictory: media reports mention 180 days to appeal a disabled account 7, while a German lawyer writes on a legal portal that Instagram regularly threatens to delete suspended accounts within 90 days 8. Neither figure is confirmed. Note the deadline stated in your notice, and ideally appeal the same day.
Wrong decisions happen. From June 2025, thousands of users reported suspensions without any visible rule violation and blamed AI moderation 9. Since March 2026, Meta has let AI make even more decisions, including on appeals 10. Meta says the new systems make 13% fewer mistakes than human reviewers 4. That is Meta's own figure.
On 4 June 2026, the Oversight Board decided its first case about an account suspension. It upheld that specific suspension but found the process flawed: unclear rules for permanent bans, hardly any support with appeals, and no disclosure of when an AI made the decision. It recommends an overview of status and violations, immediate and specific notifications, and written reasons in the appeal. The recommendations are not binding on Meta 311.
What can you do outside the app? It depends on where you live
If you live in Germany or Austria, you have several extra routes, and most of them cost nothing. In Switzerland, Instagram's own appeal is the main route.
| Where you live | Routes beyond the in-app appeal |
|---|---|
| Germany | Appeals Centre Europe; the consumer advice centre's (Verbraucherzentrale) free letter generator, in German, which creates an objection to a suspension on Instagram or Facebook (as of 22 July 2026) 13; a complaint to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), Germany's coordinator for digital services. It received 2,033 complaints in 2025, mostly about poorly justified account restrictions, and forwards cases about Meta to the Irish regulator, which takes time 14 |
| Austria | Appeals Centre Europe; the responsible authority is KommAustria |
| Switzerland | Not eligible for the Appeals Centre Europe, according to the centre 19 |
Whether legal steps are possible beyond that, for example if you use your account commercially and keep losing income, a lawyer in your country can tell you. If that is your situation, get advice early.
How does the Appeals Centre Europe work?
The Appeals Centre Europe is an independent out-of-court dispute settlement body for people in the EU. Among others, it reviews decisions by Instagram, Facebook, Threads, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube, including account suspensions 19.
The key facts (according to the Appeals Centre, accessed 13 Oct 2026):
- Cost: currently no fee for users. The platforms pay.
- Language: disputes are submitted in one of seven languages, including English and German.
- Deadline: the platform's decision must be no more than six months old.
- Residence: you must be located in the EU. People in Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein cannot submit a dispute for now.
- Duration: the target is 90 calendar days, up to 180 for complex cases.
- Effect: the decision is not binding. Meta decides in the end, though platforms must engage in good faith.
Excluded, among other things, are suspensions for fake or bot accounts, automation or ban evasion, hacked accounts, suspensions only for being linked to a suspended account, impersonation, copyright questions and decisions older than six months 19.
What the numbers say: from April 2025 to March 2026, around 24,000 disputes came in, about 12,000 of them admissible. Where the centre was able to review the content, it disagreed with the platform in 59% of cases. It decided many cases in the user's favour because the platform did not supply the disputed content 20. How often Meta implements these decisions is only partly known.
How to file: start a case at appealscentre.eu, choose the platform, describe the decision and upload screenshots. Have the date and reference of the decision ready.
Why isn't a replacement account a solution?
Because Meta can also suspend accounts that are meant to get around a suspension, even if they belong to the same person and show content similar to the removed account 21.
- The replacement account can be taken down at any time, along with everything you have rebuilt there.
- You lose routes. The Appeals Centre does not review suspensions for ban evasion or for being linked to another account 19.
Some agency guides still recommend a "backup account" with its own phone and proxy. That is exactly the forbidden evasion, and a VPN doesn't change it.
How do you prevent a suspension?
With content that follows the rules, normal behaviour, a well-secured account and channels you own yourself.
- Profile and content: keep your profile picture and bio low-key, because they affect the whole account. No offer combined with innuendo, not in your bio, captions, Stories or DMs. More in Can you put your OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio?.
- No spam: no bought followers, no mass follows, no identical comments or DMs, no bots.
- Check weekly: your Account Status and, in your insights, the share of non-followers. A sudden drop is an early warning sign.
- Secure your account: two-factor authentication through an authenticator app instead of SMS, because SMS codes can be intercepted through SIM swapping. If it is offered, set up a passkey, which Instagram has supported since April 2026 22. Add a separate, well-protected email inbox. Step by step in Secure your Instagram account.
- Know about fake copyright reports: scammers report accounts repeatedly for alleged copyright infringement until Instagram suspends them, then demand money to withdraw the reports. Meta does not verify who is filing 23. Don't pay, save evidence, object through the official form and report it to the police. Keep your original files with their creation dates. More in Fake copyright strikes and extortion.
- Build your own reach: your own website, a newsletter or a channel on another platform, so that a suspension doesn't cut your whole connection to fans. See Which traffic source suits you?.

All answers as a list
How long does an Instagram appeal take?
Instagram does not give a reliable timeframe; reports range from days to weeks. At the Appeals Centre Europe, the target is 90 days.
Can I use the Appeals Centre if I live in Austria or Switzerland?
From Austria, yes, because Austria is in the EU. From Switzerland, no: the centre only accepts users located in the EU.
Will I get suspended just for being on OnlyFans?
From everything that is known, no. In April 2026, Instagram head Adam Mosseri said, in essence, that Instagram does not allow nudity or solicitation. So accounts are suspended for content and promotion, not for your job 24.
Does Meta Verified or Meta One help with a suspension?
Hardly. Paying Meta Verified subscribers reported canned replies and closed chats in 2025 25, and the Oversight Board also found in 2026 that they got no meaningful help with suspensions 3. Since September 2026 there is also the Meta One subscription bundle 26. Whether Meta Verified will be folded into it, and what support comes with it, is open. Don't sign up for either subscription as an emergency fix.
What if my account was hacked and then suspended?
Then recovery through Instagram's help pages comes first, for example by video selfie. The Appeals Centre does not review hacked accounts. Whether legal steps are possible, a lawyer can tell you.
Our take
A suspension feels final, but often it isn't. Rule out a hack, appeal immediately, document everything and use the routes outside the app that are open to you. The shortcut through a new account or a paid "unban service" usually costs you more in the end.
maevia works with creators who live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and speak native-level English. If you want to build your channels so that a single suspension doesn't knock everything over, apply now. There is no obligation, and we work without bots, bought accounts or evasion tricks.
