How does the Instagram unban scam work?
After a suspension or a hack, strangers get in touch and offer to get your account back for a fee. They call themselves "recovery specialists" or "ethical hackers", or claim to work at Meta. Security vendors have described the same pattern for years 12.
A typical sequence:
- You post a cry for help, for example in a Story on a second account, on X or in a forum: "My Instagram got suspended, does anyone know what to do?"
- Within minutes, messages arrive, in comments, DMs or on Telegram. Often with screenshots of supposedly rescued accounts and glowing "customer testimonials".
- Then comes the offer: "100% unban", "within 24 hours", "I have a contact on the Meta team". Prices from a few hundred to several thousand dollars are mentioned 1.
- Payment upfront, usually in crypto or gift cards. Often together with a request for your password, a confirmation code, a photo of your ID or a video selfie.
- Then nothing happens. Or a second demand comes "for the final unlock". In the worst case, the scammers use your details to take over your email inbox as well 1.
This scam is so common that we warn about it explicitly in Instagram account suspended. This article is about why it can't work, and what to do instead.
Is a paid Instagram account recovery service legit?
No. There is no third-party access to Meta's review process. Meta decides on suspensions and appeals itself, by now to a large extent with AI 3. There is no back door that can be opened for money.
Even vendors who sell "legitimate" unban services indirectly confirm this: they admit they can only fill in the same forms that are available to you.
Not even Meta's own paid offers are a key. Paying Meta Verified subscribers reported canned replies and closed chats during mass suspensions in 2025 4. The Oversight Board, Meta's independent oversight body, found in June 2026 that they got no meaningful help with suspensions 5. If even official paid support can't unban you, a stranger on Telegram certainly can't.
And anyone who really works at Meta doesn't sell unbans through direct messages.
How do you spot unban scammers?
By a handful of signals that almost always appear together 12:
| Warning sign | Why it's suspicious |
|---|---|
| They contact you unprompted, shortly after your cry for help | Real help waits until you look for it |
| Guarantee ("100%", "or your money back") | Nobody can guarantee Meta's decision |
| Time pressure ("today only", "or your account will be deleted") | Pressure is meant to stop you thinking |
| Payment in crypto, gift cards or to private individuals | Almost impossible to get back |
| They want your password, codes, backup codes | That's how they take over your account |
| They want ID or a video selfie outside the Instagram app | That lets them misuse your identity |
| No legal notice, no company, no contract | You have no one to hold responsible |
| A profile full of "proof of success", but new or without real history | Screenshots are easy to fake |
A single one of these signs is enough to walk away.
What about "Meta employees" who want to help you?
They are almost always scammers. Meta doesn't contact you by DM, WhatsApp or Telegram to offer an unban, and never asks for your password or a confirmation code 1. Real messages from Instagram can be found in the app, in Account Status and in the security settings under "Emails from Instagram".
A related scam is fake emails "from Meta" that threaten deletion and contain a link to "appeal". How to recognise them is explained in Spotting phishing from "Meta".
What is worth paying for, and what isn't?
Legal advice can cost money; "unban services" can't be worth it. Whether legal steps against a suspension are possible, a lawyer can tell you. There is no guarantee there either, and legal advice comes with a cost risk.
How to tell real legal advice from a scam:
- Licence: lawyers are admitted to practise and can be checked in an official register. In Germany, for example, that is the Federal Bar's nationwide official lawyer directory (Bundesweites Amtliches Anwaltsverzeichnis) 13. In other countries, check the register of your national lawyers' regulator.
- A legal notice and a firm address on the website.
- A clear fee agreement in advance, in writing, not in crypto.
- No promise of success. Reputable firms assess your chances; they don't guarantee anything.
- They never want your password.
The same goes for agencies: a reputable agency doesn't ask for your passwords and doesn't sell unbans. How to recognise one is covered in OnlyFans agency red flags.
Offers to "just set you up a new account with its own phone and proxy" are no solution either. That is exactly the ban evasion Meta prohibits, and the new account can be taken down along with the old one at any time.
Which official routes are free?
All of them. Depending on what happened:
If you were hacked - Recovery through Instagram's help page for hacked accounts (instagram.com/hacked) 14. - In the EU, Meta offers a video selfie that is compared with the photos on your profile 8. Only do this in the official app. - Step by step in Instagram hacked: the first 60 minutes.
If you were suspended, wherever you live - Appeal in the app, ideally on the same day.
Extra routes if you live in Germany or Austria - Appeals Centre Europe: a certified dispute settlement body for platform decisions, free for users located in the EU. Excluded, among other things, are hacked accounts, ban evasion and copyright questions 10. It does not accept users in Switzerland. - In Germany, the consumer advice centre's (Verbraucherzentrale) letter generator, in German: it creates a free objection to the suspension (as of 22 July 2026) 9. - In Germany, a complaint to the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), the German coordinator for digital services. It forwards cases about Meta to the Irish regulator, which takes time 11.
All the steps in detail are in Instagram account suspended. If you were suspended through fake copyright reports and are being blackmailed, read Fake copyright strikes and extortion.
What do you do if you've already paid?
Stop paying immediately, secure your accounts and report it to the police. You're not naive; these scams are designed for people in an exceptional situation.
- No further payments, not even for "the last step".
- Change passwords if you shared any, starting with your email inbox, then Instagram. Turn on two-factor authentication (checklist).
- Contact your bank or payment provider if you paid by bank transfer, card or PayPal. Whether anything can be recovered depends on the payment method. With crypto and gift cards, the money is usually gone.
- Shared your ID? Then expect identity misuse and ask the police what you should do.
- Save evidence: chat history, profile name, proof of payment, wallet address.
- Report it to the police. In Germany, you can also do this through your federal state's online police station (Onlinewache).
- Report the account that scammed you, so others don't fall for it too.
How do you protect yourself before it happens?
By preparing today, so that in an emergency you don't have to depend on strangers.
- Secure your account: an authenticator app instead of SMS, a separate email inbox, backup codes stored safely. During a 2026 wave of takeovers through Meta's AI support, accounts with two-factor authentication reportedly stayed protected 12.
- Put together an emergency folder: backup codes, the linked email and phone number, screenshots of your profile, links to the official routes.
- Ask for help carefully: if you ask for advice publicly, say that you don't want offers from "recovery services", and don't open DMs from strangers about it.
- Look after your own channels: a newsletter, a website or a second platform, so you can reach fans even without Instagram.

All answers as a list
Are there any legit Instagram unban services?
Not in the sense of an unban for money. No service has access to Meta's review that you don't have yourself. The only legitimate help is legal help from a licensed law firm.
Does Meta Verified help if I'm suspended?
Don't count on it. Subscribers reported canned replies in 2025, and the Oversight Board found in 2026 that they got no meaningful help with suspensions 45.
Someone recommended me their "contact at Meta". Could that be real?
Very unlikely. Even recommendations from apparent acquaintances can come from hacked accounts. Meta doesn't offer unbans through personal contacts.
A hacker is offering to "hack back" my hacked account. Should I do it?
No. Apart from the money usually being gone, you're giving a stranger even more of your data. Use the official recovery and, if there is commercial damage, legal help.
How much does a lawyer cost for an Instagram suspension?
That depends on the case and the procedure. Clarify the costs in the first consultation.
