What can Meta AI translation do for your Reels?
Meta AI translates the spoken words in your reel into other languages and voices them in a voice meant to sound like you. If you want, it also adjusts your lip movements to the new language 1.
The feature launched in October 2025 with English, Spanish, Hindi and Portuguese. In January 2026, Meta began rolling out Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Kannada, and on 14 July 2026 Instagram added French, German, Italian, Japanese and Korean 1. According to a report on a statement by Instagram head Adam Mosseri, Meta now supports 18 languages in total 2. For a creator who films in English and lives in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, that means for the first time: a single reel can reach German-speaking viewers in your own region in their language, without reshooting. Other languages such as Spanish, French, Italian or Portuguese can come on top.
The key facts:
| Point | What Meta and current reporting say |
|---|---|
| Cost | free 1 |
| Who can use it | on Instagram, all public accounts, in countries where Meta AI is available 1 |
| Voice | meant to mimic the sound and tone of your voice 1 |
| Lip sync | optional 1 |
| Preview before publishing | optional 2 |
| Processing | up to 24 hours after publishing 2 |
| Label for viewers | "Translated with Meta AI" 1 |
| Viewers can switch it off | yes, via "Don't translate" 1 |
Meta limits the feature to "countries where Meta AI is available" 1. A vendor guide from September 2025 reported that, at that time, the feature was not available in the EU 5. Meta has added German and other European languages since then, but we could not confirm whether the feature is now available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Whether you get the option, you'll see in your app. Also important: your account must be public. A private account doesn't get the feature.
How do you turn on Reels translation?
You switch it on while creating the reel, before you share it. Based on reporting from July 2026 2 and earlier guides 5, it works roughly like this:
- Create your reel as usual and go to the last screen before sharing.
- Turn on the option to translate your voice with Meta AI. It may be tucked away under more options.
- The first time, allow Meta AI to translate.
- In the translation settings, choose the languages, switch lip sync on or off and turn on the preview.
- Share the reel. The translation can take up to 24 hours; you'll get a notification.
After publishing, you can view the translated versions in the reel, edit or delete each one individually and report errors 2. The exact menu wording can differ by app version and language, so follow what your app shows.
Always turn on the preview. It costs you a few minutes and protects you from the biggest risk, which is explained further down.
Which reels are worth translating?
Reels in which you speak alone, clearly and without much background noise work best. In other words, the classic talking-head format: you, the camera, one message.
Good candidates:
- Q&A and storytime. You answer a question or tell a story.
- Daily life with commentary. Day in my life, get ready with me, vlog clips with voiceover.
- Tips from your niche. Fitness, styling, makeup, travel, cooking.
- Personal introductions. Who you are, what makes you you, what followers can expect.
Less suitable:
- Reels with music and no speech. There is nothing to translate.
- Several people talking over each other. Meta gives no information on the number of speakers. Expect weaker results.
- Heavy accents, slang, puns and in-jokes. What is funny in English often loses its meaning in translation.
- On-screen text. Meta doesn't say whether text in the video gets translated. Assume it stays in English.
Captions still make sense. Many people watch reels without sound, and Instagram itself names reels without sound as less likely to be distributed widely 3.
What should you watch for in mistranslations?
Anything with a double meaning. An AI translates the words, not your wink. A harmlessly flirty line in English can sound blunter or more explicit in German or another language, and vice versa.
For you, that is more than a question of style. Instagram does not recommend sexually suggestive content to non-followers, and an offer combined with innuendo can count as solicitation. More in Instagram shadowban. Whether moderation assesses the translated version separately is not known. Assume that everything said in the translation will be treated as if you had said it.
How to check the preview:
- Listen to the whole thing once. Don't just skim.
- Check numbers, names and places. Translations often trip over them.
- Check the tone. Does the line sound cheekier, harsher or more explicit than the original? Then delete that language version.
- If you don't speak the target language: have someone you trust listen to it, or only translate reels that are so clear that little can go wrong.
What does the feature mean for your privacy and your voice?
The translation doesn't reveal anything your original doesn't already show. But there are two points to keep in mind:
- Your voice gets processed. For the translation to sound like you, Meta AI analyses your voice. What is stored and for how long is set out in Meta AI's privacy information. If that makes you uncomfortable, leave the feature off.
- More reach means more visibility. A translated reel reaches people in other countries. That's the goal, but it also means more strangers seeing your face and your daily life. Keep your real name, your location and personal details out of your reels. What else you can do for your privacy is covered in Privacy on OnlyFans.
Meta adds the "Translated with Meta AI" label itself 1. You don't need to do anything.
Do international viewers turn into international fans?
Only if the path after the reel works in their language too. A translated reel can bring new people to your profile. Whether they follow you and later subscribe depends on what they find there.
So before you translate at scale, check:
- Bio and profile. Can a German-speaking person understand in three seconds who you are? A short line in their language can be enough. Tips in Your Instagram profile in 2026.
- Landing page. Is your link page understandable for people who don't read English well? More on the link in Can you put your OnlyFans link in your Instagram bio?.
- Messages. Someone who was addressed in German will often write to you in German. Can you reply, or who will? How fair, transparent chatting works is explained in Who writes to your fans?.
- Time zones. Your new viewers may live several hours ahead of or behind you. Because Instagram favours more recent posts 4, a different posting time can pay off. Try it and compare in your Insights.
We found no reliable figures on whether fans in other languages spend more or less than English-speaking fans. Don't rely on promises like that.
The reverse is also true: viewers who speak your language now see more translated reels from other countries too. Competition in English gets bigger, not smaller.
How do you measure whether translation pays off?
By comparing before and after and tracking subscriptions separately. A gut feeling ("seems to be going better") isn't enough.
- Two weeks without, two weeks with translation. Similar reels, similar topics.
- Compare the audience in Insights. In the country and city breakdown, you'll see whether the share from the target-language countries rises.
- Compare accounts reached and the share of non-followers, not views. Why is explained in How to read Instagram Insights.
- A separate tracking link for a version of your link page in the target language. That shows you how many subscriptions actually come from international viewers.

All answers as a list
Does Meta AI translation cost anything?
No, according to Meta it is free 1. You just need a public account in a country where Meta AI is available.
Can I choose only certain languages?
Yes. You choose the languages in the translation settings. Which ones make sense depends on your niche and on where your target audience lives; for English-speaking creators living in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, German is the obvious first choice.
Will my English-speaking followers hear the translated version?
As we understand it, Meta serves the translation based on the viewer's language settings, so your English-speaking followers will usually hear your original. Viewers can also switch the translation off with "Don't translate" 1.
Can I delete a translation afterwards?
Yes. In the reel, you can edit or delete each language version individually and report errors 2.
Does translation hurt my reach?
There is no evidence of that. Instagram presents translations as a way to reach new viewers. It remains one reel, not a duplicate.
Our take
Reels translation is the most interesting new Instagram feature of the year for creators who want to grow beyond English. It is free and quick to switch on. But it doesn't do the work that comes after: a profile that makes sense in other languages, a landing page, replies to messages and clean measurement.
maevia works with creators who live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and speak native-level English. If you're thinking about deliberately building an international fan base and want support with it, apply now. There is no obligation.
