Why does your profile decide your reach and your followers?
Because almost every new follower takes the same path: she sees a Reel, taps your name and decides on your profile whether to stay. Your profile is where reach turns into followers.
At the same time, Instagram checks your profile. According to Instagram, your whole account can be left out of recommendations for a while if part of your profile, such as your profile picture or bio, breaks the recommendation guidelines 1. Then it doesn't matter how good your Reels are: non-followers won't see them anymore. How to check this under Account Status is covered in Instagram shadowban.
A good profile is therefore clear enough to convince and calm enough to be recommended.
What should go in your Instagram bio in 2026?
Your bio should say who you are, what your profile is about and what people get from following you. It is not the place for hints or offers.
A simple three-line structure:
- Who you are: your name or stage name, one word for your niche (fitness, cosplay, travel, everyday life, fashion).
- What's here: "Workouts, everyday life and honest insights", "Cosplay projects from idea to photo".
- Next step: a neutral pointer to your link, for example "More about me: link below".
Instagram bio ideas for creators that follow this structure:
- "Mia | Fitness & everyday life. Home workouts, honest progress. More about me: link below"
- "Cosplay from sketch to shoot. New build every month. Questions? Message me"
- "Travel, coffee, bad jokes. Behind the scenes of my week. Link below"
Your bio counts twice.
- Recommendation eligibility: sexualised hints in your bio can take your whole account out of recommendations 1.
- Teen rating: since October 2025, teens can't follow accounts whose name or bio isn't suitable for them. Meta explicitly names a link to an OnlyFans account as an example. Teens also can't message or comment on such accounts 2. Since April 2026, the rule applies in more countries 3.
For you, the teen rating isn't a problem; minors aren't your audience anyway. But expect it to push your reach numbers down a little. We explain the link in your bio, the teen consequences and the solicitation rule in detail in Can your OnlyFans link go in your Instagram bio?. We won't repeat that here.
Bio check:
| Risky | Better |
|---|---|
| Offer plus hint ("exclusive content Instagram won't show you") | A description of your niche |
| Sexualised emojis combined with a link or a call to action | Neutral emojis or none |
| Code words meant to disguise the platform | Open and factual, or nothing at all |
| "DM for more" | "Questions? Message me" without a hint |
Code words like "spicy page" don't protect you. Meta judges the context, not just individual words 4.
How do you use the name field?
According to Instagram's own explanation, search matches queries against usernames, bios, captions, hashtags and places, and Instagram advises choosing a username or profile name that fits your content 9. A clear keyword in the name field can therefore help people find you.
Example: instead of just "Lena", use "Lena | Fitness & everyday life". The term should match your content, otherwise Instagram files you in the wrong place. Since "Your Algorithm", users pick topics in and out. A clear match helps you land with the right people 5.
Two limits:
- No hints in your name. For the teen rating, both name and bio count 3.
- No real name if you want to keep it private. Whatever is in the name field is public and searchable. More in OnlyFans anonymity.
Your username should be short, easy to read and ideally the same on every platform, so fans can find you again. If you keep your private and professional lives separate, it must have nothing in common with your private account.
Which profile picture works?
A portrait where your face or your signature look is clearly recognisable, and that would also look unremarkable as the profile picture of a lifestyle or fitness creator.
- Think small. Your profile picture appears tiny next to comments and in Stories. Face close up, calm background, good contrast.
- No lingerie, no suggestive pose. A suggestive profile picture affects every post, because it belongs to the whole account 1.
- Recognisable. The same or a very similar picture on every platform helps fans match you up.
- Without your face? Then all that's left is a signature element like a silhouette or an accessory. That feels less personal than a face; more in OnlyFans without showing your face?.
How do you plan your Instagram grid in portrait format?
Since January 2025, Instagram shows the profile grid in portrait format instead of square 6. According to consistent guidance from how-to sites, the tiles are cropped to 3:4, which is 1080 × 1440 pixels 10.
What follows from that:
- Keep the important part in the middle. Your face and the point of the image belong in the central area so nothing gets cut off.
- Choose Reel covers deliberately. A still taken from the middle of a movement often looks messy in the grid. Pick your own cover.
- Avoid text at the edges. It gets cut off in the grid and is displayed differently on large screens like the iPad 7.
- Recognisable beats perfect. A fully planned checkerboard grid isn't necessary. What matters more is that someone scrolling sees right away what you're about.
Which posts should you pin?
The posts that explain to a stranger in ten seconds why she should follow you. Pinned posts sit at the top of your grid, so they're the first thing new visitors see.
A proven split:
- Who are you? A short intro Reel: name, niche, what's here.
- Your best Reel. The Reel with the highest engagement rate relative to reach, not the most views. Why that's a difference is explained in Reading Instagram Insights.
- A typical format. Something you do regularly, so visitors know what to expect.
Don't pin suggestive posts. They would be the first thing strangers see, and the first thing Instagram sees when it reviews your profile.
What should you use Instagram highlights for?
Highlights are saved Stories below your bio. They answer the questions new followers would otherwise ask by DM.
Useful highlights for creators:
- About me: a few sentences, a few pictures, humor welcome.
- FAQ: common questions, without offers or hints.
- Everyday life or niche: training, travel, projects, behind the scenes.
- Collabs: work with other creators.
Highlights aren't recommended, but every profile visitor sees them. The same rules as for Stories apply here. Since July 2025, Stories and highlights are also not indexed by Google 8.
Should your posts show up on Google?
That's your call. Since July 2025, public posts from professional accounts (18 and over) can be found by Google and other search engines. You can switch the setting off 8.
- Opportunity: captions with clear terms can be found via Google.
- Risk: if you keep your creator work separate from your private life, you may not want posts to appear outside Instagram.
Check the setting deliberately instead of leaving it on the default.
Which contact details belong on your profile?
With a business or creator account, Instagram offers contact buttons, for example for email, phone or address. Show no private phone number and no home address there. A dedicated email address for your creator business is enough.

All answers as a list
Can "OnlyFans" be in my bio?
We haven't found an explicit ban. But expect your account to be blocked for teens, and avoid combining it with hints or offers. Details in our article on the link in your bio.
How often should I change my profile picture?
Rarely. A recognisable profile picture helps fans spot you in comments and Stories. Change it when it's outdated or when it poses a risk to your recommendations.
Creator account or business account?
Both are professional accounts with Insights. Creator accounts are tailored to individuals. For the guidelines, the account type makes no difference.
Does a blue checkmark help with recommendations?
A general reach bonus for paid subscriptions like Meta Verified is not proven. We look at what Instagram subscriptions actually bring in a separate article.
Should I write my bio in more than one language?
If you reach international viewers, for example through translated Reels, a bilingual line can help. If you live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and post in English, one line in German can help local followers place you. More in Reels in another language with AI translation.
Our take
A good Instagram profile isn't a work of art, it's a clear answer to the question "Why should I follow you?". At the same time, it's the part of your account that Instagram judges most strictly. A calm profile picture, a clear bio, well-chosen pinned posts: that takes an afternoon and protects every single post.
If you'd like to go through your profile with people who think about reach and rules together, take a look at our Instagram marketing service or apply now. It's no-obligation. maevia works with English-speaking creators who live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland and write native-level English.
